🌟 Seby’s Amazing Memory 🌟
Seby has a remarkable gift for recall—often described as photographic memory. Ask him about any Disney movie he knows, and he can recount the storyline, characters, and even small details with astonishing accuracy.
While “photographic memory” is often portrayed as an absolute ability, it’s more accurate to think of it as a spectrum of memory skills. Some individuals, like Seby, naturally lean toward the high end of that spectrum, displaying extraordinary recall that feels almost photographic.
This unique strength is a powerful reminder that every person on the autism spectrum brings their own talents and perspectives—Seby’s memory is one of the ways he shines
July 16, 2020, was my wife's 57th birthday. I created a Family Mosaic Birthday Project as a creative way to celebrate a loved one’s special day while building a lasting memory together. Using a stepping stone mold and a collection of colorful tiles, glass beads, stones, or even small personal treasures, each family member adds their own pieces to create a one-of-a-kind mosaic design.Â
On the bottom left is Sebby's stepping stone. Sebbies is included in our family and participates. The mosaic stepping stone is more than just a birthday gift for my wife; it was a creative way to include him. It symbolizes the strength of family bonds, showing how each person’s unique part contributes to a lasting legacy. Every time the stone is seen in the garden, it reminds the family of the joy of coming together to celebrate, create, and honor someone they love.Â
This trip also marked another milestone for Sebby: overcoming his fear of flying. For years, air travel was something he avoided. The noise, the crowds, and the unpredictability of airports were overwhelming. But with patient planning, reassurance, and small steps to build his confidence, Sebby boarded the plane and made the trip.
For him, that first flight wasn’t just about reaching a destination—it was about proving to himself that he could do something once thought impossible. For our family, it was a reminder that growth and courage often come when love, patience, and encouragement come first.
Seby’s favorite childhood movie was Snow Dogs (2002), a family comedy starring Cuba Gooding Jr. as a Miami dentist who inherits a team of rambunctious sled dogs in Alaska.Â
Growing up, he watched that movie again and again, fascinated by the snowy wilderness, the bond between humans and dogs, and the adventure of sled racing.Â
Ryan Redington, the winner of the 2023 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.Â
Meeting Ryan Redington in person made that movie come alive for him. For Seby, it wasn’t just a day trip—it was stepping into a world he had imagined since childhood.Â
Wildlife Conservation Center
Seby has always had a deep love of animals and a natural curiosity about the world. Knowing this, I took him on an adventure to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, a place where the animals live in habitats that reflect their natural surroundings. Sebby was fascinated by the bears, wolves, and moose, and he connected instantly with the energy of the place.
To help him carry the memory home, we picked out a shirt together—something he still wears proudly as a reminder of the day. For Seby, that shirt isn’t just clothing; it’s a symbol of courage, adventure, and the joy of discovering new places.
Perhaps the most touching part of these trips was seeing Seby’s excitement to write to his family about what he had experienced. He wanted them to know about the sled dogs, his first plane ride, and the animals at the zoo. His letters were filled with pride, enthusiasm, and joy—proof that these adventures weren’t just memories, but stories he wanted to pass on and celebrate with the people he loves.Â
